Growing up, my dad used to say, “It’s not what you earn, it’s what you do with it.”
At first, it wasn’t clear to me what he meant. I simply thought it was about what I bought with my money. Instead of choosing the name-brand purse, get the off-brand… be practical. Or instead of buying a burger, make it at home. Being aware of options and choices that affect your finances was one part of the lesson. It made sense. Save a few dollars when possible. For a while, I embraced this as the main lesson he was sharing.
Early on, I missed the depth of what he was teaching. He was right, “It’s not what you earn, it’s what you do with it.” Society tells us that wealth is one thing – money. We’re surrounded by images of big, bright, flashy living. It’s captivating, but it’s not the full story.
When my dad passed away, he wasn’t concerned about money or possessions. He only asked for his family.
Dad was on to something.
Money is important. It provides security, gives us the means to help ourselves and others; it creates opportunities. But real wealth goes deeper. It’s measured by the strength of our relationships and connections, the depth of our faith. We experience wealth when we have physical and mental well-being.
Dad wasn’t just telling me how to spend my money; he was teaching me how to lead. He wanted me to re-frame how I viewed money. Instead of allowing money to direct my actions, he wanted me to see the value of sitting in the driver’s seat of my life and my finances. My finances were in my control. Taking that approach, knowing your power, can lead to fulfillment in other areas of life. Fulfillment and peace translate to wealth.
There is no shame in feeling like you are not in the driver’s seat of your life and your money. It can be an uncomfortable space to sit. When actions don’t align with values, it can make you feel stuck. You don’t have to stay there.
